Description |
One ASHTRAY. It consists of an ashtray on a stand of three small hockey sticks. The top of the ashtray is a circular piece of wood, which has a carved out section in the middle. A ceramic or other material ashtray would probably have been inserted into this hollowed out section in order to keep the wood clean, and to make it easier to get rid of the ash. The hollowed out section is created by gently tapering the sides of the wooden hemi-sphere. Below this circular piece of wood is a smaller circular piece of wood, which is attached to the larger one by three nails. It is into this smaller piece of wood that the hockey sticks are nailed, with one nail per each stick. The sticks are not full size, but miniature (slightly larger than contemporary mini sticks). Each stick has "Bradford" painted on two sides. One "Bradford" on each stick is spelled down vertically, and the other "Bradford" is spelled up vertically. Above the "Bradford"s, on all 4 sides of each stick, is a blue painted rectangular band. Below the "Bradford"s, on all 4 sides of each stick, is a yellow painted band with chipped gold paint. Just below the gold bands, there is a wooden disc, to which each stick is nailed. This disc is painted black to look like a puck. The paint is on the top of the disc and the sides, but does not extend to the underside. The wooden disc is not level. Each blade of the stick has a facsimile signature of a Toronto Maple Leafs player printed in black. These players are "Red" Horner, Bill Thoms, and Joe Primeau. The signatures are printed on the two blades that face each other. It appears that such ashtrays were manufactured by a variety of stick manufacturing companies, including CCM. They generally had reproduction signatures of popular players on the same team (eg. Montréal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs). These items were made c. 1920-1940. This ashtray had to be made between 1935 and 1937, as this was the short time hockey sticks were manufactured in Bradford. |
